A Collinswood unit has been destroyed in a blaze just hours after its resident was found dead during a welfare check, 7NEWS reported.
On Tuesday, about 3.30am, emergency services were called to a property located on Harvey St after reports of a fire.
MFS crews were able to extinguish the blaze within half-an-hour, however the unit already suffered extensive damage to its interior.
Neighbour Abdul Razaie said he was saddened to hear about the fire.
Mr Razaie had called the police – less than 12 hours before – to complete a welfare check on the unit’s resident.
“I haven’t seen him for two weeks and yesterday afternoon I called the police and told them my concern – that I haven’t seen him,” Mr Razaie told 7NEWS.
The 61-year-old resident was found dead inside after police broke through the front door.
The man’s death is not treated as suspicious.
Meanwhile, the fire which tore through the newly vacant home appears to be a freak coincidence.
The MFS had stayed for several hours after it contained the blaze to prevent any flare ups, but their investigators said the fire “doesn’t appear to be suspicious”.
Damage is estimated to be around $300,000.
