The former owner of an Eyre Peninsula bakery walked in on his father having sex with one of the girls he himself allegedly groomed into his sex “cult”, a court has heard.
On Monday, the man, whom The Advertiser has chosen not to name to protect the identity of the alleged victims, told the court he walked in on his father having sex with one of the alleged victims he’d had a child with.
The man has been charged with unlawful sexual intercourse, sexual abuse of a child and indecent assault.
His former wife, the co-accused, has also been charged with unlawful sexual intercourse and sexual abuse of a child.
Both of the accused have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
While giving evidence, the man said the daughter he had with one of his alleged victims asked if he’d do a paternity test.
“Was there a concern in your mind … about the paternity of (the daughter) until you had the DNA result,” defence lawyer Sally Burgess asked.
“Yes,” he replied.
“Why was that?”
“Because (the victim) was in a relationship with my father.”
“Why is it that you think that?”
“Because I caught them having sex.”
The man told the court he confronted the alleged victim about it two days later and asked if she wanted to report it to police.
“I asked her if she wanted me to go to the police with her because I knew how old she was and she told me to stay out of it,” he said.
Prosecutor Lisa Dunlop previously told the court the former bakery owner had allegedly groomed the two young employees in the 1980s before getting his wife involved and making them pseudo members of his family.
On Tuesday, Ms Dunlop played a portion of a phone call between the male accused and one of his alleged victims after she left, what her brother previously referred to as a “cult”, in the early 2000s.
“I worked for you and you took advantage of me, I was 15,” she said.
“You abused that trust.”
The male accused can be heard cursing at the alleged victim in the audio and stating that she was 16 years old, not 15.
“I assume that’s exactly how old she was when you and (the co-accused) started having sex with her,” she said.
“No it wasn’t,” he replied.
“I suggest to you that you used and manipulated (the alleged victims) to fulfil your sexual fantasies,” Ms Dunlop said.
The trial continues.
