Two drivers were lucky to escape serious injury after a crash on the Fleurieu Peninsula saw a car fly down an embankment onto its roof and an engine ripped clean from another.

Emergency services responded to the two-car head-on crash on Victor Harbor Rd, Hindmarsh Valley just before 7am on Wednesday.

The crash sent a Toyota LandCruiser over a barrier and down an embankment onto its roof while the engine of the Holden Cruze was ripped from the vehicle.

Both drivers, a 25-year-old Hayborough man and a 28-year-old Mitchell Park man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and a SAAS spokesperson said the duo were taken to Flinders Medical Centre by ambulance.

Hindmarsh Valley local Brett Elford, 52, lives roughly 100m from the crash site and said he was glad everyone survived, but acknowledged the road could be dangerous.

He said in the past 12 months alone, he had come across at least a dozen crashes, and while the cause of Wednesday’s remains unclear, he urged motorists to slow down if necessary.

“They call it the ‘notorious Victor Harbor Rd’, but it’s not the road, it’s the people,” Mr Elford said.

The Holden was towed from the scene and the Toyota needed to be recovered by crane.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing and anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au
