Two men have faced court for the first time after a man was allegedly left “bleeding profusely” from a stab wound in Adelaide’s west – with one of the accused facing an attempted murder charge.
Dong Minh Vo, 42, and Thanh Hai Nguyen, 29, faced the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court this week over the shooting and stabbing of Sam Luong at his Renown Par home last Thursday.
On Monday, prosecution alleged two males – who Mr Luong had “never seen before” – attended his home and stated he “owed a debt”.
“They say they’re an acquaintance of ‘Ken’, at which the victim has allowed both subjects to enter the address,” prosecution said. “They had a conversation.
“Both males stated the victim owed a debt, which he was required to pay (and) they demanded the victim’s credit card. The victim refused and both males produced weapons from their waist bands. The male with a tattoo on his hands was alleged to have used a small firearm directed at the victim and fired one round into the victim’s leg.
“The other one produced a knife, possibly about 10cm in length, and stabbed the victim once to the left side of the chest. Both males left the address.”
Emergency services were called to an apartment complex on Torrens Rd just before 8.30am last Thursday where Mr Luong, 63, was found bleeding profusely from a stab wound to his torso.
Blood stains were evident throughout the complex including a large amount on the porch of one apartment. Mr Luong was taken to hospital.
On Monday, Mr Vo, of Parafield Gardens, made no application for bail and is yet to enter any pleas after being charged with aggravated attempted murder, aggravated blackmail, possessing a firearm and failing to answer a question put by police.
Mr Nguyen, of Virginia, applied to be released on home detention bail on Tuesday and had his aggravated attempted murder charge withdrawn by prosecution. He is yet to enter any pleas to one count of aggravated blackmail.
Defence counsel for Mr Nguyen – who was scheduled to appear on Monday alongside his co-accused Mr Vo – told the court there had been a “lack of clarity about the charges” his client was facing.
“I understand there’s going to be a charge withdrawn this afternoon,” he said.
“I’ve been provided with the facts of charge in this matter and there was some confusion because of the way the facts of charge were produced in respect of my client and co-accused. That gave rise to count 1 (aggravated attempted murder) being erroneously charged against my client.”
Mr Vo was remanded in custody and will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court in March next year, while Magistrate Aaron Almeida ordered a home detention report for Mr Nguyen. He will appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court later next week.
