Divers enter third day of search of Myponga Reservoir for body of Jeff Mundy

The hunt for the remains of missing man and suspected murder victim Jeff Mundy has entered its third day, as divers battle difficult conditions in the Myponga Reservoir.

The Advertiser/7NEWS Adelaide: Monday, February 6, 2023

The search for the body of missing man Jeff Mundy is entering its third day, with police divers yet to find any evidence at the base of the Myponga Reservoir wall.

It is expected to take SAPOL’s water operations unit five days to complete the search as they descend to depths of up to 42m.

The operation comes as major crime detectives ramp up their Taskforce Southern investigation, which is working to solve the murders of Mr Mundy, Trevor King and Robert Atkins.

Detective Superintendent Des Bray said “good co-operation” from people in the criminal community had led them to this location.

“Recently, we’ve received information which has suggested that Jeff’s remains may be at the bottom of the Myponga Reservoir,” he said.

“It’s important to point out that these are unconfirmed reports and we also have information from other sources that his body may be associated with a body of water in another location.”

Det Supt Bray said if Mr Mundy’s body is there, police would find it.

“If he’s not there, that will still aid the investigation if we are able to eliminate this particular site, and then focus on other locations,” he said.

More than 70 premises have been searched under Task Force Southern, with 65 people arrested and a total of 95 charges ranging from blackmail to assault, unlawful detention, money laundering, drugs and theft.

This includes four people arrested in the past week in relation to the alleged abduction and torture of Mr King.

Det Supt Bray said 40 firearms had also been recovered to date and further arrests were expected in coming weeks.

“I am confident that we have a good opportunity to recover (the men’s) remains. If we don’t recover their remains, I am confident that we will charge people and once they are charged and convicted they will have to give up the bodies or spend the rest of their lives in jail,” Det Supt Bray said.

Mr Mundy was last seen alive on December 19, 2020, when he was captured on CCTV at a chemist in the Colonnades Shopping Centre at Noarlunga before returning home to his parents’ house.

Police said he was held captive in a shipping container at a Lonsdale address for a period of time, but managed to escape.

He was taken again later.

All involve victims and suspects are believed to have been associated with South Australia’s methamphetamine scene.
