Darryl Gilson jailed for naked break-in at northern suburbs care home, ‘demanding’ sex

A gross creep’s behaviour was escalating when he broke into a woman’s home demanding sex while wearing nothing but a cap, a court has heard.

A pervert whose offending is “escalating” has been jailed after breaking into a care home wearing nothing but a cap and demanding sex.

A support worker staying in a northern suburbs care home went to sleep one night last year but was woken by Darryl John Gilson, 34, wandering the property wearing just a cream-coloured baseball cap.

“The victim asked what you were doing. You replied with words to the effect of ‘I need sex’,” Judge Anthony Allen said during sentencing last week.

Gilson approached the terrified woman lying in bed and hugged her before sitting next to her for “several minutes”.

“The victim awoke to you completely naked, stating that you desired sex, which would have been an undoubtably terrifying experience,” Judge Allen said.

The court heard the victim convinced Gilson to leave the room, closed and locked the door and called the police.

“Your offending has undoubtedly had a significant, long-lasting and adverse impact on the victim,” His Honour said.

“Unsurprisingly, the victim no longer feels safe, not only in the community but in her own home.”

The Davoren Park man pleaded guilty to one count of serious criminal trespass and indecent assault.

The 34-year-old was previously jailed in October 2022 for more than a year for brazenly masturbating in the homes of two females, after entering claiming he needed to charge his phone.

Judge Allen said Gilson’s lengthy criminal history of similar offending had “escalated”.

The court heard he was convicted in 2016 for exhibiting indecent material in a public area and had escalated to trespassing and indecent behaviour towards people inside homes on several occasions in 2022 and 2023.

Judge Allen said it was a “well-trodden path” between Gilson’s use of illicit drugs like meth after coming off medication for his diagnosed schizophrenia and other mental health disorders.

Judge Allen sentenced Gilson to four years’ jail with a non-parole period of three years, two months and 13 days backdated to April 9, 2024.

He will be eligible for parole in June 2027.
