Craig John Frost charged with possessing child-abuse material after Canadian police report

A man charged with a slew of offences related the possession of child sex exploitation material has faced court, after international authorities tipped off Australian police.

A South East man who was allegedly found with child abuse material after a tip off from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, may not be mentally capable of instructing his lawyer.

Craig John Frost, in his thirties appeared at the Mount Gambier Magistrate Court on Monday charged with numerous child abuse and exploitation material offences dating from November 2018 to May 2020.

Defence lawyer, Jarrad Sims told the court he questioned if the accused was fit to give instructions and plead, making an application to have the case sent to the District Court for further investigation.

“I have some serious concerns about his capacity,” Mr Sims said.

The Kingston SE man was arrested for allegedly possessing “abhorrent” child-abuse material and sexualised chat intercepted by Canadian Mounties.

The Australian Federal Police-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation launched the investigation in 2019.

Frost is charged with two count of aggravated possess child exploitation material, one count each of possess/control child abuse material using a carriage service, use carriage service to access child pornography, use carriage service to transmit child abuse material to self, use carriage service to access child abuse material.

The Advertiser previously reported it was alleged Mounties discovered Frost was using an online forum where he received 12 files containing child-abuse material from a person overseas.

The AFP further alleges the pair engaged in sexualised role play chat.

The matter was referred to the SA Police Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team, which searched Frost’s home where investigators allegedly found a large amount of child-sex abuse material on electronic devices, which were seized for further analysis.

Magistrate Maria Panagiotidis referred all six charges to the October sitting of the Mount Gambier District Court for further investigation.

Frost was remanded on bail.
