A man charged over a horror attack on Hindley St last month that left a young man in a critical condition in hospital has been released from custody to live within the community.

On Friday morning, Supreme Court Justice Ben Doyle released Craig Sansbury-Weetra from custody on strict home detention bail, despite concerns he has potential links to outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Outside court after the hearing, family members of Mr Sansbury-Weetra were verbally abusive and leapt at camera operators.

One relative said he “definitely” deserved to be released from custody.

Mr Sansbury-Weetra, 23, of Clearview, has yet to plead to one count of causing serious harm to another person with the intent to do so.

It is alleged that last month he attacked Jordan Dodd, 20, with a single punch to the head, then stomped on his chest and ran off.

Footage of the alleged incident from the nearby Falafel House on Hindley St shows the horrific ordeal.

Mr Dodd was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, while Mr Sansbury-Weetra was denied bail.

Police have further alleged the men clashed not only earlier that night, but also on August 3 outside The District nightclub.

Last week, Mr Sansbury-Weetra petitioned the Supreme Court for bail, insisting he was “not a violent man”.

That application was strongly opposed by prosecutor Amy Fisher, who again told the court on Friday that Mr Dodd remained in a “vulnerable condition” and to release Mr Sansbury-Weetra would be too high a risk to the community.

However, Justice Doyle said the young father was the main source of income for his young children and partner, and had no prior criminal history.

“I’m minded to think that, under all the circumstances, it’s preferable that the applicant be under home detention conditions at a residence at which he’ll have greater family support,” Justice Doyle said.

He granted Mr Sansbury-Weetra release on home detention with conditions including that he must not leave South Australia, must give up his passport, must not possess firearms, must not take any drugs or alcohol, and must not contact Mr Dodd and eight other people.

Two family members were also ordered to pay a $500 guarantee.

He is due to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court again in November.
