Kudla shooting victim Stephen Murphy “screamed like Robocop” when he was killed by Keith Russell Yandle, a court has heard.
A Supreme Court jury has also heard Yandle told his brother “you are messing up the plan” when he approached him after hearing the incident.
For several days, jurors have watched SA Police recordings of their interviews with Yandle’s brother, Brock, who was in the Kudla house at the time of the shooting.
In the videos, Brock tells police that he was in his bedroom, and heard the family’s dog barking, when Yandle “grabbed the gun” and went outside.
“He started arguing with the guy, really loud, (saying) ‘you couldn’t resist, too tempting’,” he says.
“He just kept screaming, like ‘screw you’, it was just horrible.
“Then I heard a shot, like it was in the shed because it was even louder in an enclosed space.
“(The other man) screamed like Robocop … the way he screams when he’s shot … the first Robocop (movie) in 1987.
“I heard another one (shot), maybe another scream, and then I didn’t hear anything after that.”
Yandle, 48, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr Murphy on February 19, 2023, but guilty to the lesser change of manslaughter.
Prosecutors allege he shot Mr Murphy – who was living rough in the area – four times, then stood over him and watched him die.
In the video interviews, Brock Yandle says his brother had “been losing a lot of stuff” to “a robber” prior to Mr Murphy’s shooting.
“One time he said he had almost had him, but he was 15 seconds too late,” he says.
He says he “was too afraid to leave” his bedroom on the night of the shooting, but says he heard Yandle’s wife, Cathy, outside following the incident.
“She just didn’t seem overwhelmed by anything, she just didn’t seem too scared,” he said.
Brock says he had seen “a homeless person” around the Kudla area and approached Yandle after the shooting.
“I said ‘I saw a guy on a bike, riding around, was that him?’ and I said he had long black hair and a beard … Keith said ‘you should have told me’,” he says.
“He said ‘you are messing up the plan’ … he wouldn’t tell me … I gave up and went inside.”
Brock says he does not know what the shed contains, apart from “so many air conditioners”, estimating there are “about 10” stored in it.
He says he has “always been scared” of Yandle’s gun, and that his brother had “recently” built stairs to enable access to one of two entrances into the house’s roof cavity.
The trial, before Justice Anne Bampton, continues.
