A scorned man was jailed after he set fire to his ex-partner’s home with her trapped inside, causing her to flee for her life.

Bradley John Brook’s cruel act of domestic violence left his former partner feeling betrayed and grief-stricken over losing her home of 26 years.

During sentencing, the District Court heard Brook, 50, and the victim had been in a relationship for seven years and were living together at her Parafield Gardens house.

The victim returned home on January 28 after working the night shift and told Brook the relationship was over and he needed to leave.

The court heard the victim then saw an agitated Brook with a jerry can and lighter before the dining room floor ignited into flames.

“She ran to the front door which was locked,” Judge Joanne Tracey said.

“She was screaming as the smoke and the heat of the flames travelled to the lounge room.”

The court heard the victim unlocked the door and ran away, while hearing Brook yelling “I gave up everything for you”.

“She dropped to the ground and you threw the lighter at her,” Judge Tracey said.

Police arrived and observed Brook still inside the house, who told them he needed to save the cat.

Brook was conveyed to hospital after suffering second-degree burns to his feet, lower left leg and superficial burns to his abdomen and face.

The MFS attended the scene and extinguished the fire, with the repair costs estimated at approximately $335,000.

Brook pleaded guilty to arson.

The court heard Brook was drinking heavily prior to the offending and had limited memory of it.

“You say that you felt totally blindsided by the complainant’s decision to end the relationship, realising that she had meant it,” Judge Tracey said.

“It is likely that your poor mental health including your post-traumatic stress disorder and fear of abandonment all contributed to you failing to consider the consequences and risks of your actions, and you acted on impulse.”

The court heard the victim, who had lived in the house for 26 years, had her insurance claim denied, leaving her with no choice but to sell the property as it was.

“She has lost confidence, feels betrayed and is grief-stricken,” Judge Tracey said.

“She does not understand why you did this, but feels that you wanted to take everything from her and to leave her with nothing.”

Judge Tracey said the deliberate act committed in the context of domestic violence would have been plainly terrifying for the victim.

She sentenced Brook to five years and 11 months jail, with a non-parole period of three years and four months.

The sentence was backdated to January 28.
