Boxer Ethan Joseph Lynch among 18 men charged as part of second round of Operation Ironside arrests

A boxer as well as an alleged senior bikie are among the 18 men charged as part of a second Operation Ironside round of arrests.

Drug smugglers fooled by police deception

Six men previously not linked to Operation Ironside have faced court for the first time on serious charges including kidnapping, drug trafficking and money laundering.

The men were among 18 people arrested this week as part of the second wave of the operation’s raids that police allege uncovered eight firearms, about 300ml of fantasy and small amounts of cannabis and steroids.

Police laid more than 150 charges after the raids as they continued to comb through thousands of messages from the AN0M app, which was secretly being run by police.

Boxer Ethan Joseph Lynch, 31, of Para Hills, appeared in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court, along with a co-accused, charged with false imprisonment and intentionally causing harm at Newton in April 2019.

He represented an Adelaide gym in several boxing bouts.

Mr Lynch was remanded in custody but will appear in court again next week when he is expected to apply for bail.

Of the six new faces, only Mr Lynch and two other men, Brock Michael Anastasiou, 33, of Lewiston, and Athanasios Anagnostopoulos, 57, of Broadview, can be identified after suppressions were placed on the identities of the three other men.

Mr Lynch’s kidnapping co-accused, an alleged senior bikie figure, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was previously charged with conspiracy to murder and participating in a criminal organisation during Operation Ironside resolution day on June 7 this year.

He now faces multiple other new charges including false imprisonment, intentionally causing harm and trafficking a large commercial quantity of methamphetamine.

Another accused who is allegedly a senior member of the Comanchero bikie gang was hit with three new drug trafficking charges. He cannot be named for legal reasons.

Many of the 18 men, 12 of whom appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday, were previously arrested in June, during the operation’s resolution day.

During a hearing for one of the men, prosecutors said evidence for alleged offences relates to “evidence obtained from the AN0M platform”.

But Andy Ey, for one of the men, said the new charges should have been laid on his client on Friday – when prosecutors are expected to determine which charges proceed against the bulk of the Ironside accused – instead of him being rearrested.

Many of the accused return to court on Friday.
