The teen victim of a botched murder plot was a friend of one of six young alleged gang members trying to kill a gang rival who lived a few doors down in Andrews Farm, a court has heard.
A 19-year-old alleged member of the 051 street gang from Adelaide’s northern suburbs appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday to seek bail, after being remanded in custody since his January arrest.
He is yet to enter any pleas to one count of conspire to murder.
James Caldicott, for the man – who cannot be identified to avoid identifying three co-accused who are youths – told Magistrate Simon Smart his client should be released on bail because there was “no suggestion” he was affiliated with the planned murder plot.
“The victim in this matter is not a person associated with either gang and, in fact, is someone that my client knows,” Mr Caldicott said.
“Ultimately we say that he is still a very young man. This is a very lengthy matter that relies solely in respect to e-crime – material communications – there is no objective evidence.”
Last week, prosecutors opposed a bail application by one of the teen’s co-accused alleging his release could spark a “retaliation attack” from their rival gang, KBS.
The group of six was arrested in January as part of Operation Meld after gunshots were fired at a home in Andrews Farm, in the early hours of December 16.
Operation Meld is a special task force set up to investigate youth gangs in Adelaide’s north and northeastern suburbs.
Acting Assistant Commissioner John De Candia alleged the accused were all linked to the 051 street gang and the intended target was from the KBS street gang and three guns were used.
Police said the 18-year-old victim – who lived just a few houses down from the intended target – was shot through a bedroom roller shutter window but had made a full recovery.
A court previously heard one of the alleged offenders was arrested with a phone with a group chat named ‘Hit Squad’.
In the chat, the accused allegedly discussed the specific plans of the murder including discussions about “burning the car”, having a “safe car” and making sure to “confirm dead”.
On Wednesday, without hearing any submissions from the prosecution, Mr Smart denied the man’s bail application and remanded him in custody to reappear in July.
