A taxi driver accused of hitting a four-year-old boy while he was riding his bike with his dad in Plympton Park “strongly” contests the allegations, and is prepared for the matter to go “all the way” to trial, a court has heard.
Bahal Singh Chahal, 51, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday in front of Magistrate Kym Millard charged with one count of cause serious harm by careless use of a vehicle.
An interpreter was also present in the dock alongside Mr Chahal, from Ascot Park.
Jo Smith, for Mr Chahal, asked the court to list the matter for a pre-trial conference to help “push it along”.
“This one is strongly contested,” Ms Smith said. “It’s only going to go all the way this one, we suspect.”
Emergency services were called to the scene on South Tce, outside Plympton Park Oval, about 10.40am on July 28 after reports a child had been hit by a car.
It’s alleged Mr Chahal was the driver of a taxi that made a right-hand turn on to Macklin St before it collided with the four-year-old.
Home security footage of the alleged incident showed the boy’s father riding his bike across the street – with his son a short distance behind before he was struck.
The footage, obtained by 7NEWS, shows the boy’s father then run to the scene and check on the child – who was knocked from his bike.
The boy was taken to hospital where he was treated for serious, but not-life-threatening injuries.
On Monday, Mr Chahal left the Adelaide Magistrates Court alongside a supporter and offered no comment to media.
He will return to court early next year.
