Australia’s worst-ever child sex offender has marked his 40th birthday with a remand to SA’s highest court that could see him jailed indefinitely as an uncontrollable predator.
Jadd William Brooker, of Glenelg East, faced the District Court on Friday, having pleaded guilty to 182 crimes against children and teenagers nationally and around the world.
He was also the central player in an online pedophile ring that included former SA Labor adviser Benjamin John Waters.
On Friday, prosecutors asked Judge Tim Heffernan to refer Brooker’s case to the Supreme Court, where they will make an application under Section 57 of the Sentencing Act.
That section – rewritten thanks to a campaign by The Advertiser – governs the sentencing of offenders who are unwilling to, or incapable of, controlling their sexual instincts.
If invoked, the section permits such offenders to be detained indefinitely past the end of their court-imposed sentence, rather than receive a non-parole period, due to the danger they pose.
Offenders can only be released if two medical experts agree they are willing to, or capable of, controlling themselves – age, length of sentence and infirmity are not considerations.
Tim Clarke, for Brooker, said his client did not oppose the jurisdictional change.
“My client is seeking to move things along as best he can,” he said.
Judge Heffernan remanded Brooker in custody to face the Supreme Court on a date to be set.
