Alleged murderer Justin Duane Burton has suppression order lifted on his name after alleged Hindley St stabbing

A secrecy order hiding the identity of a man accused of stabbing a cop’s son to death in a horror hostel attack has now been lifted.

Lewis Parkin’s alleged killer's lawyer speaks to media

The identity of a man accused of killing a police officer’s son after a horror stabbing at a backpacker’s hostel can be revealed.

The suppression order on the name of Justin Duane Burton, 43, was lifted in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.

During his first appearance in November, prosecutors sought to suppress Mr Burton’s identity to protect the ongoing nature of the investigation.

However, on Thursday they told the court the suppression order could be lifted as the identification processes were now complete.

Mr Burton, of St Mary’s, is charged with the stabbing murder of 23-year-old Lewis Parkin.

Police were called to an accommodation complex on Hindley Street after reports a person had been stabbed just before 8pm on Friday, November 8.

Mr Parkin sustained life-threatening injuries, with witnesses describing him as “not responding” before he was rushed to hospital where he died a short time later.

The Advertiser understands the pair were known to each other – both having stayed at the same hostel for a number of nights – before police allege Mr Burton launched a violent attack on Mr Parkin.

New Zealand backpacker Finlay Weth previously told the Advertiser he had become close mates with Mr Parkin over the course of a month while both stayed at the hostel.

Mr Weth, 18, said he was shocked by the tragedy.

“I went for a walk with him like half an hour before (the alleged attack) to go to Thirsty Camel to go get some drinks … and we were going to go see the fire dancing at 7.30pm,” he said.

Mr Weth said he watched paramedics trying to resuscitate a man from the hostel window but did not realise it was his friend.

“I tried calling Lewis,” Mr Weth said.

“And then the guy who was standing by the window with me was like ‘who are you calling?’ and I was like ‘Lewis’ and he was like ‘that is Lewis’.

“And then I just looked at what he was wearing and I noticed he was wearing long skins which is what Lewis had been wearing all day.

“I didn’t see his face – so I didn’t realise for a while.”

On Thursday, Magistrate Simon Smart revoked the suppression order on Mr Burton’s name after there was no opposition from his counsel.

Mr Burton, who is yet to enter a plea, will face court again in July.
