An alleged bikie offered to take the rap for a fellow prisoner’s drug trafficking charges – going so far as signing a statutory declaration in prison taking full responsibility, but he had no involvement in the crime, a court has heard.

Mpoyi Mutanda, 21, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with perjury and breaching home detention bail.

The court heard Mr Mutanda, who is alleged to have links to the Comanchero Motorcycle Gang, was arrested on Tuesday after cutting off his home detention monitor.

He was subject to five different bail agreements for a range of offences including assault and driving charges.

Mr Mutanda was arrested in the front yard of his home.

While in custody on those charges, police also charged him perjury.

Magistrate Kym Millard heard before Mr Mutanda was granted home detention bail in December last year, he had been housed at Mobilong Prison.

His cell mate, who is also understood to have links to an outlaw motorcycle gang, had been charged with drug trafficking offences.

Mr Mutanda and the cellmate are accused of going to the case manager at the prison and asking for a statutory declaration form.

On the form, which was signed and witnessed at the prison, Mr Mutanda took responsibility for all the cellmate’s drug trafficking offences.

However, the court heard police had evidence Mr Mutanda was not in any way linked to the other man’s charges.

Mr Mutanda is also facing assault charges for an incident at the Plain Jane nightclub last year.

A police prosecutor told the court Mr Mutanda had been involved in a fight inside the popular venue and had been removed by security alongside another man.

Police allege that while the second man was being held down on the ground by police, Mr Mutanda leapt forward and stomped on the restrained man’s head several times.

“He has no respect for authorities and no respect for bail,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Mutanda’s lawyer told the court his client had very little criminal record and had not offended since being released in December.

Mr Millard refused the application for bail, saying Mr Mutanda had been given a final warning in December and the court could have no confidence he would not continue to offend if released.

He will face court on the perjury charges in April.
