A man allegedly raped a vulnerable, passed out woman outside an Adelaide pub in the early hours of the morning, a court has heard.
Al Sang Cin Zah, 45, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday after a cyclist witnessed the alleged incident at the Strathmore Hotel on North Terrace in the CBD.
A police prosecutor told the court they would be proceeding against a charge of rape and indecent assault against the Brahma Lodge man.
The court heard the alleged victim was drinking at a 21st birthday on January 9 before going into the city.
“The complainant and the accused are not known to each other,” the police prosecutor said.
“At about 4.30am the complainant left a hotel on Hindley St with a friend.
“The complainant has some difficulties with memory from about this point of the evening on.”
The court heard the alleged victim and her friend were walking towards the taxi rank near SkyCity.
“She next recalls finding herself lying on the ground on the steps in front of the Strathmore Hotel – she was woken there by police,” the police prosecutor said.
The alleged victim went to the toilet later that day and realised her underwear were off to the side.
The court heard a witness rode her bike past the Strathmore Hotel at 6.30am on January 10.
She reported seeing three people on the stairs outside the hotel, including a woman and a man who appeared to be unconscious and asleep and a third person who police allege is Cin Zah.
“He has a similar appearance to the description of the defendant,” the police prosecutor said.
“The witness describes seeing the third person sitting beside the sleeping woman … the woman was fully exposed at the time, she didn’t appear to be wearing any underwear.
“The witness further describes seeing digital penetration.”
The police prosecutor asked for a 14-week adjournment to review CCTV footage from outside the Strathmore Hotel.
Magistrate John Wells granted prosecution an eight-week adjournment until August.
