One of the street gangs in Monday’s fatal stabbing flew in members from violent Melbourne youth gang BDK to help their attack.

Members of violent Melbourne youth gang BDK – Blood Drill Killers – have been enlisted by one of Adelaide’s Sudanese youth gangs to help battle its bitter rival.

The Advertiser can reveal key players in Adelaide’s 051 youth gang are closely linked to members of BDK and have been actively encouraging their participation in the violent feud with rival KBS – Killa Block Squad.

Several members of BDK were involved in the violent knife brawl between 051 and KBS at the Nairobi nightclub in March and six were arrested in the wake of Monday morning’s fatal fight on North Tce.

The six arrested on Monday are facing charges including murder, carrying an offensive weapon, carrying an article of disguise, breaching bail, aggravated affray and travelling under a false name.

The six BDK members were among a group who flew into Adelaide from Melbourne last Friday night, with several using false identities to avoid detection for breaching bail conditions.

They were picked up by members of 051 on Friday night and taken to hotels including the Mantra in Hindmarsh Square and the Quest Apartments in Franklin St, where they were staying.

Police initially arrested several BDK members at the Quest Apartments following the fatal stabbing on Monday morning and another four – including the youth charged with murder – were arrested at Adelaide Airport just after 4pm Monday as they were about to board a flight to return to Melbourne.

The murder victim, a man, 25 from Victoria, was not a gang member but was closely associated with members of the KBS gang.

Detectives believe the man, whose identity is suppressed, was with a group of KBS members when a knife fight started in Sia Furler Lane at 2am Monday and was chased down by three gang members – two 051 members and one BDK – and caught on North Tce where he was repeatedly stabbed and stomped on.

While detectives have arrested one of the trio – a BDK member – another key offender, a 051 member, has not yet been charged with any offence but investigations are continuing. The third gang member is not believed to have participated in the actual attack on the victim.

BDK emerged as a prominent street gang in Melbourne in 2018 and its members, predominantly Sudanese but including Australians, have been responsible for dozens of violent incidents.

The gang is a splinter group from Melbourne’s notorious Apex and Menace to Society youth gangs that have been involved in multiple violent clashes.

The Apex youth gang originated in Dandenong, about 30km southeast of Melbourne’s CBD, in early 2016 with its members primarily from a Sudanese refugee background.

The gang was largely responsible for the Moomba riots in March 2016 and its violent activities escalated following that event. Its membership has declined in recent years with other gangs, such as BDK, growing in prominence.
