An alleged attempted shoplifting using a pram to conceal the loot has led to a “scuffle” in Adelaide’s north with alleged thieves, shop staff and members of the public before a woman drove a car at the group.

A man and woman were arrested Monday after police were called to a Golden Grove shopping centre just before 7.30pm following reports of theft.

Police say it was alleged a 30-year-old man from Elizabeth Vale and a 28-year-old woman with no fixed address had attempted to steal from a store.

The pair allegedly placed items in a pram and trolley and exited through a fire exit outside the Aldi without paying.

Store staff said they allegedly saw the man leaving the store and getting into and driving away in a white Holden sedan while the woman remained inside the shop and continued to fill her trolley.

She then allegedly attempted to leave through the emergency exit and rejoined with the man, who had returned with the vehicle.

However, police say a “scuffle ensued” when the store manager and the staff tried to stop the pair from getting away, with members of the public assisting in restraining the man.

According to 9News, the woman allegedly punched the store manager and staff several times in an attempt to get them to let go of the man restrained, and then allegedly got into a vehicle and reversed towards the group, causing witnesses to release the man.

The suspects fled the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle behind.

Police said they found both suspects a short distance away and charged the man with two counts of assault, theft and minor drug offences.

He has been bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on February 4.

The woman has been charged with two counts of assault, theft, breach of bail, drive in a manner dangerous, drive unlicensed and minor drug offences.

She has been refused bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
