Accused murderer Lee Paul Streng has been taken into custody hours after being released on bail.
Mr Streng – who is charged with the murder of 51-year-old mother-of-two Louise Hughes – was released from Port Augusta prison on Monday after being granted bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.
The 34-year-old was charged with one count of breaching bail after his release on Monday and on Tuesday appeared in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court.
He did not apply for bail during that hearing and was remanded in custody.
On Monday, the Adelaide Magistrates Court had granted Mr Streng – who appeared in court via AVL from Port Augusta Prison – release on bail with strict conditions.
During the hearing on Monday the court was told a post mortem report had deemed the cause of Ms Hughes’ death at Park Holme last September to be “inconclusive”.
She was found unresponsive in a house on Condada Ave in September last year.
Stacey Carter, for Mr Streng, had told the court it would be “very hard to substantiate any change of murder against Mr Streng” based on the current report.
“One of the possible outcomes of the report is that the victim’s level of intoxication on its own could potentially be one of the causes of death,” she said.
Prosecutors had asked the court to adjourn the case for two weeks to obtain an addendum post mortem report, but the delay was opposed by Ms Carter who instead asked the court to dismiss the charge.
The charge was not dismissed but Mr Streng was released on bail with a number of strict conditions including he report to police daily and abide by an overnight curfew.
Family and friends previously described Ms Hughes, of Glengowrie, as a beloved and “lovely person” who had an “infectious smile”.
Mr Streng will next appear in court in a fortnight on the murder charge, while his breach of bail charge was adjourned to a date next month.
