THE US lawyer from hit Netflix series The Staircase will join a panel of legal experts – including former Australian Border Force commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg – at an event in Brisbane late this month.
Lawyer David Rudolf is best known for defending author Michael Peterson, who was convicted in 2003 of murdering his wife Kathleen.
The cult Netflix series explores years of legal battles as Mr Peterson attempts to prove his innocence, finally receiving a new trial but entering an “Alford plea” to manslaughter – a guilty plea where the accused concedes there is evidence to convict but maintains they are innocent.
Kathleen was found in a pool of blood at the bottom of a staircase in the couple’s family home.
Mr Peterson called 911 and told them she had fallen down “15 or 20 stairs”.
She had seven lacerations to the top and back of her head.
Hosted by Brisbane private investigation firm OJT Investigations Group, Mr Rudolf will speak about his long-running involvement in the case at QUT on March 30.
The panel discussion will also feature high-profile Gold Coast lawyer Chris Nyst and Brisbane barrister Dr Sean Barry.
The event is touted as a discussion on “the power of the media, DNA and forensic evidence, the use of investigators for criminal defence matters, preparing for trials and investigations and the challenges facing our judicial systems in Australia and the US”.
Mr Quaedvlieg will use the event to speak about Tour de Force, a yet-to-be-released book he has written on his career.
Tickets to the event can be purchased through Eventbrite.
