Don’t be fooled into thinking Macau (also spelled Macao) is just for high rollers to enjoy. “The Vegas of China”, this former Portuguese colony is rich in culture, architecture, unique natural surroundings and exciting night-life.
HEAD DIRECTLY TO
The historic hub of Macau with its cobblestoned streets and narrow lanes, piazzas and Portuguese-style, blue-tiled street signs. There’s a mix of European and Chinese architecture with sites such as the 17th-century ruins of St Paul’s, Senado Square and A-Ma Temple.

THE SIDE OF MACAU YOU HAVEN’T SEEN
DON’T BOTHER
Spending too much time inside giant casinos as there’s much to see and do along the Macau Peninsula, Taipa village and the island of Coloane, the lungs of Macau known for its walking trails, main beach and well-located restaurants and picnic areas.
You may even take in a show, such as the House of Dancing Water at the City of Dreams, rather than spend time at the gaming tables next door.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
Take a stroll through some of the leafy parks on the Macau Peninsula, among the popular choices for the locals being Cameos, the hilltop of Guia Lighthouse (once the highest point of Macau) and Lou Lim Ioc Garden hidden behind walls within the heart of the city. All are free to enter.
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE ONE RESTAURANT
For traditional Portuguese cuisine in the City of Gastronomy (Macau is a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities list for Gastronomy), try one of two in Taipa Village – Antonio or O’Manel.
For Macanese cuisine – one of the world’s earliest forms of fusion food – head to Restaurante Litoral, both in Taipa and historic Macau Peninsula.
