A PERFECTLY filtered Instagram upload is as crucial to modern travel as a well-packed suitcase and a just-right tan.

So it was never going to be long before hotels tapped into your Instagram feed.

The new 1888 Hotel in Pyrmont, Sydney, is calling itself "the world's most Instagrammable hotel" and it has a good case for the crown.

The recently opened boutique beauty boasts a selfie space where guests can pap themselves in the plush lobby and a digital mural of revolving Insty pics at reception.

Free wifi is included, #obvs.

The hotel is giving away a free night's stay to any Instagram user with more than 10,000 followers.

And each month, the guest who snaps the best shot while staying at the hotel will be invited back for a free night's stay next time they're in town.

The hotel's devotion to photography is a nod to its origins. The historic building was opened as a wool store in 1888, the same year Kodak patented its first box and roll cameras.

The property has undergone a $30 million makeover and opened this year as part of the 8Hotels stable.

Chief executive Paul Fischmann said photographs had always been a part of travelling, and the hotel wanted to honour the evolution of the holiday snapshot.

"The hotel has such an authentic contemporary aesthetic that we thought we should embrace the fact that all modern travellers can take memories away with them using their smartphones and share their experience with friends," he said.

It's not the first hotel to embrace social media for the 21st Century holiday-maker.

The Sol Wave Hotel opened last year in Spain, offering Twitter-themed rooms, drinks and a virtual community called #SocialWave that guests could use to interact and flirt with each other.
