You donut want to miss this giant treat by Lobethal Bakery

Reckon you could you eat a whole giant donut from Lobethal Bakery? While it’s best shared, the new donut is being tackled solo. Who’s up for the challenge?

Lobethal Bakery broke the internet this week when it posted a photo of its latest donut – a massive chocolate creation measuring 20cm across.

Posted on Facebook, a photo of the giant donut, coated in chocolate and hundreds and thousands sprinkles, prompted some 4100 comments and was shared over 450 times.

Baker Jonathan Trinkle, grandson of the original Lobethal Bakery owner, is the creator of the donut. He’d planned to make just one for a special order, now the bakery has lost track of quite how many they’ve sold.

“It’s been a frenzy but it’s worth it,” says co-owner Sarah Trinkle. “It’s a great laugh juggling these donuts with serving coffees, but bring it on!”

“First was the chocolate one, then we did the cream and jam one. The cream and jam one is fantastic – it’s messy to eat – just hide yourself in a closet,” Sarah laughs.

The big donuts have proven so popular that baker Jonathan has expanded the line up to include a honey one and a lemon glazed one.

“The lemon glazed one he makes, I would say it tastes better than the normal (size) glazed donut,” Sarah says. “It’s incredibly light and awesome.”

“Now, we’re thinking of doing a limited-edition M&M edition donut – see keep your eyes peeled.”

Jonathan says it only took two tries to perfect the new donuts. He notes that the only big difference is the amount of time it takes to fry them – the process takes a lot longer because they’re bigger, he says.

He says the chocolate is still the best seller

“I saw a child devour one in front of us,” Sarah says. “He just hoofed the whole thing down – he polished it off in one sitting.

“I’d day share one between four – but if you’ve got one in front of you just go for it. They’re really light so you can actually eat the whole thing yourself.”

Sarah notes that although they are available every day at all five of Lobethal Bakery’s stores, they sell out quickly, so it is best to place an order before you arrive.

Prices are: chocolate $6.50; lemon glazed $6; jam and cream $9.50, and honey and cream $9.50. And, really, why stop at one?
