The Cheeky Chocolate Queen opens at Christies Beach

A NEW sweets shop in the southern suburbs features quirky novelties such as chocolate trolls, toolboxes and chess pieces.

BEING so close to the coast is what attracted Rebecca and Shaun Day to open a chocolate shop at Christies Beach.

The couple opened The Cheeky Chocolate Queen on Beach Rd earlier this month, after growing the business from their O’Sullivan Beach home for the past six years.

Mrs Day says she loves driving along the Esplanade to and from work each day.

“We’ve been looking for a shop for a little while in the area,” Mrs Day says.

“All the other shop keepers around us are really quite friendly — they are supporting us and we’re supporting them.”

Initially a jewellery designer, she made a few batches of rocky road to sell, and customers suggested she branch out and sell that instead.

“I’ve been (selling) chocolate through Facebook and markets for five to six years now,” Mrs Day says.

“I also do fundraisers as well.”

The Southern Times Messenger spoke with Mrs Day as part of its Love Local campaign, which celebrates the places, faces and spaces that make our community so special.

Mrs Day makes the chocolates and runs the shop, while Mr Day helps package the stock.

She says the moulds she uses — from colourful characters like trolls to quirky novelties including toolboxes and chess pieces — are what sets her business apart.

While the business has only been open for a month, Mrs Day says she already has many regular customers.

“My frog is my biggest seller here,” she says.

“My vegan range is getting big now too because people keep asking for it.”

She also stocks her chocolates at The Marketplace Boutique in Blackwood and The Boulevard Cafe at Victor Harbor.
