GOODWOOD baker and patisserie Boulangerie 113 has shut its doors for the final time.

Opened in 2012, the little piece of Paris on Goodwood Rd shared an appreciation and love for French food culture with its flaky croissants, sourdoughs, pastries, flatbreads and more.

The boulangerie closed its doors Thursday night and made its final wholesale deliveries Friday as liquidators wound up the company.

It comes as another popular Adelaide bakery, Red Door Bakery at Croydon, announced it was closing due to ongoing disruptions caused by the Torrens to Torrens roadwork project.

Boulangerie 113 baker and co-owner Ashley Heffernan explained that the closure was due to the domino effect of too many of their wholesale customers closing and defaulting.

“We’re just a small business, so we can’t absorb the impact of those things happening too often,” he says. “For us this has been such a fast and aggressive process.”

Co-owner Bianca Heffernan added: “We incurred too much loss from wholesale customers that closed their doors.”

Many regular customers arrived at the doors Saturday morning and were dismayed to find them closed.

Regulars took to Twitter to lament the loss of the bakery. “It’s a grim day indeed when you find out your favourite bakery (and best French bakery in Adelaide) has closed its doors due to financial difficulties-so popular and such lovely staff- what the hell!!!! Best wishes to staff of #boulangerie113 ...Adieu !!” tweeted Sal Cole (@SalCo04).

“Sad to see Boulangerie 113 has suddenly closed its doors. Made the best bread and croissants in #Adelaide,” wrote local journalist and broadcaster Michael Smyth.

“We honestly didn’t realise how far and wide our product went and how many supporters we had out there,” Bianca said.

“And we are so thankful and appreciative of every message we’re received. I’ve tried to reply to every message on Facebook and Instagram to try to make sure everyone knows how much we appreciate it.

“It devastates us – we love the community, we love our customers. Ash had been doing what he loves. We’re both heartbroken – we’re heartbroken to lose something that we love and we’re passionate about. We loved that place with all our heart.”
