SHARING a spread at Madame Hanoi is best done by mixing old favourites and new experiments; here, you can’t go wrong.

The standard menu is beautifully complemented by options like pre-theatre dining or lunch boxes. And then there’s the Hendricks High Tea, complete with a beautiful pot filled with — you guessed it — gin tea.

From the main menu, the fresh and sour crunch of a green mango and papaya salad is quickly followed by a pile of deep-fried baby squid with a subtle smoked chilli flavour.

A standout dish is pungent prawns with kaffir lime, a bloom of heat, and black bean sauce.

An old favourite remains the heo quay cuon ra... neat wrap-it-yourself rolls of crisp pork belly with fresh herbs and the salty sweetness of hoisin, nestled into a crunchy lettuce cup. A Vietnamese coffee is the perfect finish.

And you can come back later for the High Tea that offers layers of Madame Hanoi classics, from softshell crab in a springy bao to delicate desserts and tea poured over curled cucumber.

Madame Hanoi is one of Adelaide’s best Vietnamese restaurants, served with more than a soupçon of French chic.

The only sour note that is not perfectly offset by sweet and salt is that you have to pay for chilli on the side — only $3, but still.
