A US-style burger and ice cream bar is riding a wave of popularity and on Sunday opened its 16th Australian store — and largest to date — in Rundle St, city.

There’s a laid-back beach shack atmosphere to Betty’s Burgers & Concrete Co, which started in Noosa in 2014.

Co-founder and national operations manager Nik Rollison hails from Southern California, and said the family restaurant’s style harks back to the 1950s, from the Coca-Cola fountains (made in South Australia) to lolly jars on the wall.

“It’s a little bit of a throwback. We like to think that we bring the beach to everywhere we go,” he said.

And while it feels a bit American, it’s a “100 per cent” Australian concept, “Australian developed and created,” Mr Rollison said.

The menu centres on the Betty’s Classic burger, still $10, which includes beef, cheese and Betty’s sauce.

Mr Rollison said you’ll have room for afters.

“Concrete is a Midwestern American term for frozen custard ice cream with stuff in it basically,” he said.

Mr Rollison believes good service and the fresh, handmade product will lure people from fast-food chain stores.

“You can get a $6 or $7 burger down the street, but you won’t get (our) level of service,” he said.

Betty’s is licensed and open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. They don’t do breakfast.

“It’s a burger and ice cream place. We let the coffee people do coffee,” Mr Rollison said.
