IS there anything more satisfying than a crispy, salty hot chip?
Other than a whole paper-wrapped package of them to share with friends ... or not.
South Australians love hot chips, whether it’s on the beach in the middle of summer, or as a perfect pile of comfort food in winter.
Ethan Miller, 19, of Henley Beach, says he is hooked on the feta spiked chips, drizzled in garlic and sprinkled in herbs and spices. “I love chips in general but the feta and garlic on these make them so much sweeter – they are just perfect, the added flavour is awesome,” he says.
The SourceSA’s food team searched beachside takeaways, as well as suburban chicken shops and restaurants to find 10 of the best in SA.

Cheeky Greek
Chips with feta and herbs, $8
Definitely Greek in flavour, but more gutsy than cheeky, these chips are just about a meal in themselves. It’s a generous serve, crunchy, not over oily, with heaps of salty, crumbled feta cheese and oregano taking the experience up a notch. Delicious — or “orea” as the Greeks would say. And for an extra treat: they put chips in their yiros — brilliant.

Barry’s Burger
Sweet Potato Chips, $5.50
The sweet potato version of the humble chip almost deserves a top 10 of its own, but for a single entrant we couldn’t look past the crisp, rosemary-flecked variety at cult burger joint Barry’s. Getting sweet potato crunchy isn’t an easy feat but these guys fry to perfection, creating a sweet and salty treat. Can’t decide between their sweet potato and traditional chips? They also offer half-and-half serves.

Sotos Fish Shop
Small $4.50, Medium $6, Large $7.50, Extra Large $10
An old favourite, these crispy, fatter than most, golden chips were well worth the 45-minute wait at this popular seaside eatery. Piping hot and with just the right amount of chicken salt, it’s no surprise locals flock to Sotos — and are willing to join the endless queue — specifically for these crunchy pillows of goodness.

CHICKEN SHOP TAKEAWAY ...
Chicken Time
Small $5, Medium $7, Large $9, Family $11, Jumbo $13
Locals love the light, bright, super clean and efficient takeaway shop’s chunky fries with crunchy slightly darker gnarly edges and the required spud fluff within. They are generously loaded until popping out of the top of white bags then set into sturdy brown paper bags, left open so they hold their crunch until you get home. Salts are optional, or go for gravy on the side.

Colonel’s Chicken & Fish Shop
Small chips 4.90, Med 6.90, Large 9.90, Extra large 12.90
Plump, crispy on the outside, and pillowy-soft within, the Colonel’s chips have become the suburban eatery’s calling card. No gimmicks here, just golden morsels cooked until the right amount of crunch is reached, the Colonel’s generous serve of chips are then given a liberal dusting of chicken salt which adds to the tastebud and visual appeal.

Funky’s on Duthy
Small $4.50, Med $8.90, Large $8.50, Extra large $10.50
Funky’s (formerly Funky Chicken) nails the perfect hot chip. This is the benchmark in shop-bought chips. The thick cut, deep golden chips have a light, super crunchy crust while inside it’s all about hot, fluffy, pure white, moist potato. There’s no sogginess, no grease, just fried potato perfection. A shake of chicken salt adds a savoury edge but these chips need no further help.

Burger Boss
Pepper loaded fries, $7.99
Gone are the days of when just a side of fries is enough. These loaded fries are topped with melted cheese, jalapeños and BB’s famous secret sauce — a creamy, yet tangy concoction. They don’t overdo it with the toppings, which sit nicely on a generous serving of lightly salted, thin-cut fries. Ask for their secret menu option if you dare. You will be satis-fried.

Fluffy and soft in the centre, crisp on the outside and just enough seasoning make the Port Admiral Hotel’s chips some of the best on Adelaide’s pub scene. The ample serving of the crinkle cut chips are tasty can be ordered with many of the traditional pub meals or on the side.
The chefs give you a bucketload to dig into as well. All chips are served with a side of Stuart Wesson’s secret sauce.

For when you need a salty side to your dine-in meal ...
Sean’s Kitchen
There’s no going to Sean’s Kitchen without ordering a side of their infamous duck fat chips. Uber crisp and uber naughty, potato is cut into fries with the skin on, twice-cooked and tossed in just the right amount of salt before they’re scooped into a metal cone lined with paper, ensuring they don’t go soggy. The clincher is the vibrant housemade ketchup the chips come with, spiked with Sean’s special hot sauce. You won’t want to share. $11, Sean’s Kitchen, North Tce, Adelaide 8212 2811
Salopian Inn
You know you're on a good thing when a restaurant is just as good at bar snacks as it is the fancier fare. Chef Karena Armstrong knows a good chip, and uses a French mandolin to cut the potatoes (Desiree at the moment) into consistent, longer-style fries. They’re just-golden, crisp and incredibly more-ish, especially with the side of roasted garlic mayo. Goes down a treat with one of their specialty gins. $9, Main Rd, McLaren Vale 8323 8769
