Turnbull government announces $190 million drought aid

GOING to the pub for a pint is really an act of charity — but only if patrons order a craft beer being sold for a worthy cause.

Slaking a thirst with an Indie Kid pilsener will help drought-stricken Australian farmers feed their families and livestock.

Prancing Pony Brewery, in the Adelaide Hills, will donate 70 kegs to pubs across Australia and the pubs will donate the proceeds from the kegs to a charity called Drought Angels.

The brewery’s chief executive officer, Corinna Steeb, said pubs only had to cover the $50 government excise per keg and commit to donating a minimum of $585 to charity.

“Having a beer with mates is an everyday tradition for many people so providing a karma keg for drought-affected areas seems the logical thing to do,” Dr Steeb said yesterday.

“We just wanted to give something back to the people who really are this country’s lifeblood and essential to small businesses like ours.”

Publicans could charge a set price for the beer or invite patrons to set their own price.

“With a karma keg, people can pay what they want but we say if you pay 10 cents, you get 10 cents of karma,” Dr Steeb said.

The company chose a pilsener because it was an “approachable” beer, with wider appeal than a stout.

The No Grain. No Food. No Beer. campaign starts Monday, with 28 venues participating, and ends September 3.

Dr Steeb said she hoped the campaign would raise between $25,000 and $35,000, with 100 per cent of proceeds used for relief work.
