A Muslim man’s heartfelt apology to a rabbi about the Sydney Bondi massacre has sparked a viral moment of unity.
A heartfelt video has sparked a viral moment of unity, showing a respectful and emotional interaction between a rabbi and a Muslim man in the wake of the horrifying Bondi massacre in Sydney.
The pair’s interaction on the other side of the world in Atlanta in the US has moved people internationally, amassing more than 14 million views in one day and more than 700,000 likes on Instagram.
Rabbi Leivy stands on Atlanta’s Beltline, a 35km walking loop, and talks to people who walk past about Judaism.
On Monday a Muslim man named Farooq approached Rabbi Leivy and said humbly, “Sorry for everything that happened over in Sydney.”
Farooq shook his hand, and the Rabbi asked him if he celebrated Hanukkah.
“I’m Muslim,” Farooq told him. “Brother, we’re all in this together.”
The pair immediately embrace, and Rabbi Leivy says “in the same world, we are, so let’s add in lights”.
“Peace and love, that’s all we got,” Farooq tells him.
Thousands have flooded the comments admiring Farooq and Rabbi Leivy’s humility in the midst of the devastating tragedy.
“I’m so proud of these two tender hearts,” one user said.
“This is beautiful to see, please let’s have more of this instead of hate,” another commenter reacted.
At least 16 people, including one of the gunmen, have been killed in the shooting on Australia’s iconic Bondi Beach, with 26 victims still in hospital and 12 of them in critical condition.
