TPG has apologised after thousands of users lost internet access after a technical issue disrupted the provider’s fixed broadband services just after 5pm on Monday.
While the issue affected users nationwide, a spokesman for TPG told NewsWire a large portion of affected users were in NSW because the majority of the state’s traffic goes through Sydney.
“A storm related power outage and generator failure at our Sydney data centre disrupted broadband services for our consumer and business customers (on Monday evening),” he said.
“Connectivity is being gradually restored for customers, although some business platforms continue to be affected.
“We are working on restoring all services as soon as possible.”
The outage affected TPG, Vodafone, iiNet, Internode and Kogan fixed internet customers.
TPG declined to comment on the number of affected users, but estimated it would be “in the thousands”.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused customers and thank them for their patience,” the spokesman said.
The telecommunications company addressed the disruption on X at 7pm as customers took to the social media platform to express their frustration.
“Any chance you can actually send a communication on your social media accounts, given your website is down, informing people of what is happening? The fact you have no idea what’s going on says plenty to me. Shambolic. Will seriously consider switching (internet service providers),” one person wrote.
“It took a long time to put out this message which doesn’t even acknowledge the extent of the outage, like TPG website and support being out of service. Clearly TPG didn’t learn from last year’s Optus outage,” another wrote.
There were still a number of users being affected on Tuesday morning, with more than 60 Downdetector reports indicating “problems” at TPG Telecom just after 6am.
“12 hours later still not back online....” one person wrote on X.
“My internet is still down and would you please provide an ETA? I tried to call but only able to get a call back in a week!” another wrote.
