A TikTok showing police officers enjoying Sydney’s Vivid festival has fallen flat on social media due to a tone-deaf “stomping” transition that triggered hundreds of followers.
NSW Police took to social media to share the light-hearted clip titled: “Night shift hits different when Vivid is on.”
The video shows an officer filming himself pulling his hat on as the camera angle transitions to the floor. The officer then stamps his boot down on the screen, transitioning the shot to him and his partner smiling in front of Circular Quay.
The officer is then seen making V’s around his eyes while dancing.
“Love it!” Vivid Sydney commented on the post next to an emoji face with hearts.
However, a portion of NSW Police’s 63,000 follower base took offence to the clip - claiming the footage of the officer stomping the screen with his foot was “tone-deaf” at best and “sick” at worst.
Queensland Greens Senate candidate Ben Pennings called out NSW Police over the clip.
“Art imitates life. NSW Police think it is funny to copy a TikTok transition – someone getting stomped on by a cop in boots. What the hell is next,” he said.
NSW Police has spent years keeping active on its social media channels, regularly posting law enforcement memes and mimicking dance trends to build public relations.
But some followers said the page had missed the mark with its latest video.
“As someone who as a young man with his friends copping floggings, I think this is sick,” one viewer responded.
“Police really felt this was tiktok trend for them? Take the boot off our necks #blacklivesmatter,” added another.
“Not the best look NSW Police,” tweeted journalist Cam Wilson.
NSW Police acknowledged the backlash and posted an apology underneath the clip, which has been viewed over 560,000 times in two days.
“We’d like to acknowledge concerns raised by members of the community and apologise to anyone who may have been offended by the transition we used,” NSW Police responded.
Others took the opportunity to inject some humour and joked about their illegal activity in the comments section.
“I have 1 pound of purple haze in my room,” one said.
“I’m out at Vivid breaching my bail (right now),” another added.
NSW Police has been contacted for comment.
