A mother has been blasted online after she refused to move off the middle of a skate park in New Zealand despite repeated pleas from a scooter rider.

The mother was seen conversing with another woman in the middle of what is believed to be Gordon Spratt Reserve Skate Park in Pāpāmoa, on New Zealand’s North Island, in footage shared by social media user ‘Scooter Brad’.

“Karen thinks it’s OK to stand around a skate park, news flash … it isn’t,” Brad wrote on the video, which has wracked up over four million views.

The footage shows Brad walking up to the women, who are standing with young children, before repeatedly asking them to move off the track.

“Hey team, I don’t mean to be rude or anything but if they’re not on wheels, you guys shouldn’t be on the skate park. If you could move off to the side please, that’d be cool,” he said.

“My son is on his …” the mother responded.

“Oh, that’s great but you guys and your kids aren’t so if you could wait or watch from the side?” Brad suggested.

The woman then explained the children were “running around”.

“We couldn’t get access to our scooter and our skateboard so we’re having a run around,” she said.

“I understand,” Brad replied. “But if you could just refer yourself to the sign over there …”

“We actually just decided to go to the park, can you please leave us alone,” the woman interjected.

Brad insisted the park is a public space and he was trying to explain the rules.

“We’re just leaving … Thanks so much man, I didn’t get it,” the mother responded, before Brad moved off.

However after noticing her continuing to stand in the middle of the skate park, Brad again asked the woman to move off the track for safety reasons.

“Excuse me, can we …” he said, before she interjected: “I’m leaving”.

“Come on, you’re the adult come on, it’s for your protection and their protection,” said Brad.

“You can walk around the park, you can walk around the footpaths for where the feet go. This is a wheeled roller sports complex.”

The woman appeared to make her way off the skate park before the footage cut off.

Many online condemned the woman’s actions, while applauding the “polite” and “respectful” way Brad handled the situation.

“’Excuse me team’ was honestly the most respectful way this conversation could have started. Love it,” one person wrote.

“That was a super respectful attempt,” another agreed.

“Why is it so hard for people to say ‘oops sorry about that’ and just MOVE!!!” said another.

“It’s equivalent to standing in the middle of a road,” another commented.

“Imagine standing in the middle of a basketball court with three friends just talking while people are (trying to) play a pick-up game … this would be the equivalent,” said another.
