TO PREPARE for a new era of virtual reality gaming, Xbox has announced a new console coming sometime next year.
Dubbed Project Scorpio, the new console is unlike anything the gaming industry has ever seen before.
Microsoft announced the product, which it calls an “uncompromised gaming machine” at its e3 showcase in Los Angeles.
The system will include eight CPU cores and six teraflops of graphics processing power, meaning it will be able to support both 4K gaming and high fidelity VR.
After announcing a VR version of Fallout 4 at its showcase last night, Bethesda’s Todd Howard featured in a video for Microsoft’s announcement.
“I think it’s gonna be magical,” he said.
Unlike previous next generation consoles, Project Scorpio will be backwards compatible, meaning people will be able to play older Xbox games on the system.
Project Scorpio wasn’t the only new console announced at the event, with Microsoft showcasing the Xbox One S, which will be available in August this year.
The Xbox One S is essentially a revamped version of the current console.
Coming in white, the console is 40 per cent smaller than its predecessor, has an internal power supply and supports 4K for Blu-ray and streaming.

Another of the key announcements made by company head Phil Spencer was a new Xbox Play Anywhere program, which allows users to play games on their Windows 10 PC and Xbox One console.
“Gamers have never had more choice in how and where they play,” he told the audience.
“We are bringing our biggest games line-up ever to Xbox One and Windows 10, uniting gamers across networks on Xbox Live and expanding the Xbox One family of devices with the addition of Xbox One S and ‘Project Scorpio’ to give gamers more choice in how and where they play. There’s never been a better time to be an Xbox gamer.”
The event also showcased a number of new titles including Gears of War 4, Halo Wars 2, Forza Horizon 3.
