It’s been a decade coming but the original Ghostbusters are coming back — in digital form, that is.
Developers Saber Interactive have announcement that Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered will be arriving on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on October 4.
The game was first released in 2009 and starred the original actors Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis from the 1984 and 1989 films.
Set two years after the events of Ghostbusters II, players were cast as a rookie recruit joining the team as a new wave of paranormal pandemonium descends on New York City.
As the announcement for the remastered version puts it: “Manhattan is overrun once more by ghosts, demons and other paranormal creatures unleashed by a mysterious force and only the Ghostbusters can drive this evil back to whatever dimension it crawled from to save the Big Apple.”
The 2009 game was well received at release — a rarity for licensed games — with many players saying it felt like they actually were part of the team and taking part in a Ghostbusters film.
Ten years is a long time in technology, so while the game looked not too bad when it was released, it has been decided it’s time for an overhaul to coincide with the 35th anniversary of the first movie’s release and to take advantage of modern graphics capabilities.
Among other things, the remastered version features 4K high-definition graphics, better textures and better lighting effects.
Writing on the official Sony PlayStation blog, game producer Matt McKnight said Ghostbusters Remastered had been made possible partly thanks to a lucky find.
“All of the in-game videos and cut scenes (from the 2009 game) were found on a hard drive in storage from one of the original creators and remastered in 4K HD,” he said
“The great storytelling and audio has all been preserved while enhanced textures and lighting complete the package.”
More details are expected as the game gets closer to release but if you’re a Ghostbusters fan, this definitely looks like one to reserve a spot in your containment unit, er, hard drive, for.
