‘Dynamic mix of weather’: Brutal cold front set to wallop Australia

Winter’s last gasp is set to be a brutal one for Aussies, with damaging winds and even snow on the cards.

Australians from South Australia to southern Queensland have been warned to expect rain, thunderstorms, damaging winds, icy temperatures, potentially dangerous squall lines and even some snow as a cold snap sweeps across the country from Thursday.

Weatherzone forecasts a large cold air mass from the Indian Ocean will spread from Western Australia on Wednesday to South Australia and the eastern states from Thursday into Friday.

The meteorological service predicts a “dynamic mix of weather” to strike different parts of the country.

“Showers will develop over parts of southern WA, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT, NSW and southern Queensland between now and Saturday, spreading from west to east as the week unfolds,” Weatherzone states.

“Thunderstorms are likely to affect parts of South Australia, NSW, Victoria and Queensland on Thursday and Friday.

“Some storms could become severe, with damaging winds and large hail the most likely threat.

Weatherzone warns a squall line could develop over western NSW on Thursday that could increase the risk of damaging winds and lightning as it moves from west to east.

“Blustery winds will accompany the passage of the front, with damaging gusts possible in parts of Tasmania, Victoria and NSW, most likely about elevated terrain,” Weatherzone states.

The service warns the low temperatures could pose a threat to livestock.

And snow is also a possibility in Tasmania, Victoria and southern NSW.

“Snow may also reach central NSW on Friday or Saturday,” the service states.
