Powerful footage has emerged of a massive new offshore solar farm in China.
The video shows the initial power units of China’s first 1-gigawatt offshore photovoltaic project connected to the State Grid, the State Power Investment Corporation confirmed on Wednesday.
This project marks a significant step forward for China, and the world, serving as a model for the global expansion of offshore solar energy.
The offshore photovoltaic project in Dongying, in east China’s Shandong Province, is funded by Guohua Energy Investment Co, a CHN Energy subsidiary.
It is the largest offshore solar project in China’s open sea regions.
It takes the lead in the world to employ large-scale steel truss platform piling technology for offshore installations, which was used to install 2,934 photovoltaic platforms, according to CHN Energy.
It is the first project in China’s photovoltaic industry to implement 66-kilovolt offshore and onshore long-distance trans mission lines, delivering greater transmission capacity at a lower cost.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate 1.78 billion kilowatt-hours annually, enough to meet the power needs of approximately 2.67 million urban residents in China for a year.
It will also save 503,800 tons of standard coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1.34 million tons.
New technology
China also introduced another revolutionary technology recently — as a new form of “tap and pay” takes hold in the country.
Customers could be seen scanning the palm of their hand – as opposed to a bank card – at the checkout of supermarkets.
Shenzen-based tech giant Tencent first launched the biometrics recognition service – versions of which have been offered by companies like Amazon in the past – last May, and has worked in recent months to make it more mainstream.
Senior Tencent executive Guo Rizen told CNN in January the company has “confidence” in the adoption of the technology, which encourages users to leave their wallet and phone at home.
It can also be used to unlock the doors of their homes or workplaces, and on public transport in lieu of a transit card.
Users simply hover their hands over a sensor fitted with an infra-red camera that can analyse individual palm prints and the unique pattern of veins under the skin.
While it works much the same way as facial recognition software, Mr Rizen said the system was more accurate.
“With face scanning technology, people can look a lot like each other – like twins,” he said.
“But with palm payments, even brothers and sisters who look alike have unique palm prints and veins.”
