Tour Down Under: New podium girls’ outfit by Liza Emanuele revealed

THERE’S a lot more to being a Santos Tour Down Under host than congratulating the winning cyclists with a kiss on the cheek — just ask veteran podium girl Emily May Hartley.

THERE’S a lot more to being a Santos Tour Down Under host than congratulating the winning cyclists with a kiss on the cheek — just ask veteran podium girl Emily May Hartley.

Ms Hartley, 23, helped unveil the latest specially-designed Liza Emanuele TDU outfits exclusively to The Advertiser, alongside emerging local rider Braden O’Shea, 16, who dreams of one day competing in the event.

Ms Hartley, who will take part in her fourth TDU event between January 17-24, said her and other hosts’ ambassadorial roles were vital.

“I guess some people don't understand the role that we have ... and the input that we have on the day,” she said.

“You’d be surprised what we do while we’re standing there smiling on stage, we’re helping to orchestrate the whole thing, it probably wouldn’t be as seamless as it is (without us).”

“We also assist riders signing into each stage and we just generally help people who are going to the event.”

Ms Hartley said she loved Emanuele’s new podium outfit, a sky-blue off-the-shoulder custom-made dress featuring top quality Italian fabric. It’s one of three looks the TDU hosts will receive from Emanuele, who has created outfits for the ambassadors since 2010.

“It’s great, I think it’s something really different compared to other years. I think the colour really stands out,” Ms Hartley said.

“Each time I come in she’s (Emanuele) so clever in putting together outfits, I’m amazed by her ability to come up with something new.”

Also confirmed as a TDU host next year is former SA model Lauren Tscharke, who currently lives in Melbourne with her long-term partner, Carlton player Bryce Gibbs. The pair welcomed their first baby, Charlie Jay, in June.
