Bernard Tomic almost certainly won’t be offered a Brisbane International wildcard, but tournament organisers haven’t completely shut the door on giving the former Wimbledon quarter-finalist a place in the qualifiers.
Tomic, 32, is reportedly training on the Gold Coast with the intention of playing in next month’s Australian Open qualifiers.
His world ranking of 214 would be good enough to secure him a berth in the qualifying event for the first grand slam tournament of 2025.
However, it’s a ranking that wouldn’t be enough to guarantee the former world No.17 a place in the 24-player qualifying event for the December 29-January 5 Brisbane International, which will headlined by 24-time grand slam singles tournament winner Novak Djokovic.
But tournament director Cam Pearson has left the door slightly ajar for Tomic to be given a wildcard for the qualifiers.
“Rankings will determine the field for the qualifiers and a couple of wildcards as well,” Pearson said.
“He (Tomic) has got to enter first.”
Pearson said it would be “pretty tough” to offer Tomic direct entry into the Brisbane International’s 32-man main draw via one of the three wildcards despite them set to be awarded to three Australian players,
“We’ll look at all options for wildcards, but we’ve got a lot of Australian players who are ranked just outside of the cut (55) for the main draw, so it makes it hard (to give Tomic a wildcard), given he’s ranked in the 200s,” Pearson said.
There are 11 Australian players outside the world’s top 55 who have a better ranking than Tomic.
“We haven’t made decisions on the wildcards, but I suspect for the main draw it would be pretty tough (to give one to Tomic),” Pearson said.
However, Pearson was glad that Tomic, whose world ranking dropped to 825 in 2022, seemed committed to a career resurgence.
“It’s good to see Bernard out there playing and winning matches,” Pearson said.
“His ranking has improved a lot, and I’m just happy to see him playing.
“I’ve known and watched Bernard play since he was quite young. He’s got undeniable talent.
“It’s good to see he’s enjoying his tennis again.”
