SHE starred in the highlights reel from the opening round of the women’s NRL premiership and now Jessica Sergis is tipped for a major role for St George Illawarra in Saturday’s match against the New Zealand Warriors at ANZ Stadium.
Dragons coach Daniel Lacey is expecting his young gun, felled in a big hit and sidelined with a concussion in round one, to be back on the field for Saturday’s game against the Warriors.
While still following return-to-play protocol on Friday after being knocked out before half-time in their loss to the Broncos last Sunday, Lacey said centre Sergis will be named for the crucial game on Saturday.
Lacey confirmed Raecene McGregor, who left the field for most of the second half with a shoulder injury, and captain Sam Bremner, who injured her toe, are also good to go.
The Dragons coach said he may not know whether Jillaroo Talesha Quinn, on the return from ankle surgery, has been given the green light by the army to play until late on game day.
“Talesha, we still don’t know but she will be in the 19 and we will cross that bridge tomorrow,” Lacey said on Friday.
“She trained with the team on Wednesday and pulled up fine.
“It’s the first time in a while she hasn’t had any swelling.”
The battle with the Warriors is a must-win for a Dragons side downed 30-4 by the Broncos in week one.
“There’s only three games to get to the big dance and we are one down so we are putting everything out there on Saturday,” Lacey said.
“If we can put 60 minutes together out there I have confidence we can do this.”
Lacey is hoping the high temperature forecast for Saturday will play into his team’s hands.
“Someone will break out there first so we are hoping the heat will be an advantage for us,” he said.
Lacey is also for a far more physical game than the Dragons encountered against the Broncos.
“It will be more physical that the first game for sure,” he said.
“You see the big hits. But sometimes those hits don’t actually hurt the most. It’s the constant hitting that does the damage.”
