New South Wales trainer Garry Frazer is unfazed by the overnight Adelaide rain as he prepares to saddle up Spright in Saturday’s $600,000 Group 1 Sangster Stakes at Morphettville.
Spright, a three-time Group 3 winner who was placed in the Group 1 Moir Stakes behind Viddora last September and second behind Sunlight in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley in March, has had seven starts on soft or worse track for just one placing.
“There was bugger all I’m told, 1-5ml,’’ Frazer said. “It hadn’t rained for three months over there so I don’t think that rain will have too much affect on the track.’’
And the Hawkesbury horseman was equally as dismissive after drawing the extreme outside barrier of gate 15 on Tuesday morning.
“What can you do, at the end of the day is probably not as detrimental to her as it would be some horses,’’ Frazer said. “Put it this way, I’d rather be out in 15 then drawing inside in barrier one.’’
Spright has settled well in Adelaide and had her final Sangster hitout on the course proper at Morphettville on Tuesday morning.
“She’s settled in good there in Adelaide according to Jordan (son) and she galloped good on the course proper yesterday,’’ he said.
One thing Spright has on it’s side is star jockey Damien Oliver.
Frazer said the Sangster loomed as realistically the most winnable Group 1 contest Spright had seen after tony’s McEvoy’s Sunlight was sent to the paddock earlier in the week leaving Spright a $4.20 favourite with Ladbrokes.
“I think so Sunlight would have been $2,’’ Frazer said.
“She (Spright) will need a bit of luck because of her racing pattern and how she likes to get back in her races but she deserves a Group 1. She should have finished a lot closer to Sunlight at Moonee Valley last time that's for sure.’’
The money has been for WA mare Lady Cosmology post barrier draw who has been $12 into $9.50 despite drawing barrier 14, while there was also specking for Will Clarken’s Everyday Lady who opened $101 and firmer to $71 on Wednesday.
