King Of Leogrance cops 1kg Adelaide Cup penalty after his Roy Higgins Quality win at Flemington over the weekend

Can a weight penalty stop Victorian stayer King of Leogrance in the Adelaide Cup? That is the question after the race favourite was given an extra kilogram after winning the Roy Higgins Quality on Saturday.

Adelaide Cup favourite King Of Leogrance has been handed a 1kg penalty for the race following his impressive Roy Higgins Quality win last weekend.

The Danny O’Brien-trained stayer will now carry 54kg in next Monday’s two-mile feature, where he dominates betting at $2.80 with Ladbrokes, with Damien Lane booked to ride.

King Of Leogrance will be trying to give O’Brien a second Adelaide Cup success after he won with Dermerger in 2005, while part-owner Lloyd Williams is also no stranger to Cup success.

He claimed his first with Just A Dash in 1981, followed up with Gallic in 2007 before Muir caused an upset in 2011.

Last year’s winning trainer, Paul Preusker, will be hoping Dark Alley can secure his place in the final field.

Currently 30th on the order of entry, with a field of 20 plus four emergencies to run, Dark Alley profiles similarly to stablemate Surprise Baby, having had just six starts, and comes off an impressive last-start Morphettville win over 2043 metres.

Jordan Childs has been booked to ride Dark Alley, who sits on the third line of betting as an $8 chance.

John Allen will ride Yogi for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace while Kayla Crowther, fresh from her first Group 3 win in last week’s Lord Reims aboard Eperdument, will stick with the Shane Oxlade-trained mare in what will be her second Adelaide Cup ride.

The Adelaide Cup field will be finalised on Tuesday morning ahead of the barrier draw at Morphettville.
