South Australian harness racing’s leading driver Dani Hill faces an extended stint on the sidelines after being involved in a shocking fall at Globe Derby Park on Saturday night.

Hill suffered a bad break of the tibia in a fall which also saw fellow Adelaide driver Paul Cavallaro injured after he was catapulted through the air in the freak accident.

Hill’s horse Im Sir Blake choked down in the home straight with a lap to run in the Group 3 SA Derby, falling in front of the second half of the field causing a chain reaction which resulted in Cavallaro being launched from the sulky of Culture King and landing heavily.

He’s believed to have suffered a broken wrist and facial injuries.

Hill is expected to have surgery in the Royal Adelaide Hospital today (Sunday).

Hill is a three time premiership winning driver who recently recorded her 1600th career win had won two of the first four races, including the Justice Family Plate with Ardens Legacy, before the incident.

Darby McGuigan also fell but avoided in the fall while all horses escaped serious injuries.

The race was abandoned and marred SA harness racing’s biggest night.

It’s not the first time Hill has been involved in serious fall.

In May 2010 she suffered a sunken eye socket, broken jaw, cheek and nose resulting in the loss of sight in one eye in a horror fall at Globe Derby.

In one of the bravest comebacks in harness racing, Hill not only returned to race driving but has claimed the past three SA Driver’s Premiership with 209 winners in 2015-16 (the first female SA driver to achieve the feat), 169 in 2016-17 and 203 winners last season and had already driven 84 winners this season before Saturday night’s fall.

The SA Pacing Cup was won by former New Zealand pacer Sicario who gave champion Victorian driver Gavin Lang his third SA feature in the past five years.
