Race day focus: Best bets, inside mail for Hawkesbury

Blue-blooded filly of the highest order, pedigree-wise, and has both the talent and potential to go well beyond provincial grade in time.

NEXT BEST

Race 1, No.2: MONASTERY

A So You Think gelding from the David Payne stable who gave a very good account of himself in town 13-days ago when runner-up on the Heavy 10.

VALUE BET

Race 7, No.2: PATTON

Overlook the last run; put that down to heart arrhythmia. Trialled since, went well - goes well here.

THE INSIDE MAIL FOR HAWKESBURY

RACE 1

Monastery is a son of So You Think trained by David Payne which are two reasons why the horse has a better than average chance of making it to some good mile-plus races when he turns three. As for more immediate matters, Monastery would only have to repeat something close to his city placing 13-days ago to score. Alinghi’s grandson, Californiachoicest, won a trial at Randwick last Monday on a Heavy 8 but not sold on him on a bottomless track. Deft Leopard was next in line behind Tango Fame and Monastery at Warwick Farm on May 11. Monastery’s stablemate, Monfiscuia, was fourth in that same race.

RACE 2

Misty Dreams has placed twice in her six starts and it is worth noting that both of those placings were on Heavy tracks. The daughter of Sebring has much more depth to her form than all of her rivals. Thrown in Tommy Berry and barrier 3 and it all looks good for filly here. Skyhawk is a better horse than what he showed on debut at Newcastle. Impossible to know how he will handle the Heavy track (or not) but he could be a razor-sharp improver in the race. Sequin Dress ran very well indeed at Kembla on May 7. This Camelot filly is on an upward trajectory and shapes as a major player.

RACE 3

Tavi L’Amour is a maiden at present, but London to a Brick, she ends her career with a lot better C.V than it presently reads. Not that she has a bad record, she is a metro runner-up but the point is, she is bound for better than this. Stella Glow is unplaced in two runs on heavy tracks but both of them were at very least pass marks. Was nothing short of barnstorming at home at Scone first-up and the extra 100m is tailor-made. Maralago would only have to repeat her first-up run at Newcastle on the Heavy 10 that day to go close here.

RACE 4

Kris Lees trained filly Show Me Your Love won at Mudgee first-up and was runner-up at Scone on debut at her only run of the first preparation but she was so good at each run that she just has to come to a better grade of race and maybe even better again after this one. Well-bred and totally untapped. Stablemate Luna Eagle could almost be unbeaten in her two starts this time on but whatever the case, all her good form has been her recent form. Roccaforte should do the Profondo camp proud again as a last start winner at Kembla on the Heavy 9. Verbek has obvious and strong claims.

RACE 5

King Charming is a fascinating runner - if he comes that is. The David Pfieffer trained Kiwi bred four-year-old is unbeaten in his two career starts at Grafton then Doomben when Matthew Dunn had him and it is worth noting whether he be here or not that his trials for Pfeiffer have been outstanding. I’m Not Slew’s best form is on top of the ground so whether she is here is also up in the air. It could be that we are left with Rebecca’s Quest on top with a few absentees but nothing wrong with that. She has won eight times and she seems to get through the slop well enough. Worth noting that she was runner-up at her only prior visit to the venue.

RACE 6

Tags is a good horse but has a few little issues at the start; that is to say, he can be slow out and actually stood flat-footed in the Mudgee Country Championship Heat but still almost won. Not sold on him as an out and out muddie but he doesn’t appear to be a duffer either. Mr Hussil shapes well here after running so well when a narrow second on the Country Cup at Scone. Pleading has never missed a place in all seven career starts and is three starts for a win and two placings on heavy tracks. Go well - always does. All three of Buba’s wins have been on Heavy tracks.

RACE 7

Patton ran really well first-up at Kembla and while he was 7th of 9 there second-up and looked very disappointing to the eye; he has to be totally forgiven owing to the heart arrhythmia. Was ordered back to trial and won his heat on the synthetic at Randwick last Monday, May 10. Stick with him. Marvelous was building up to a maiden win and he was super impressive too when it came last start at Kembla, Can keep progressing Exciting filly Rhone may go to the midweeks at Canterbury tomorrow and why not; she ran them off their legs when she won on debut at Taree and had trialled like that was going to happen. Big watch.
