Orderofthegarter has earned a 1kg Caulfield Cup penalty for his win in the Group 3 MRC Foundation Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.

The Danny O’Brien-trained Orderofthegarter booked his place in the Caulfield Cup with his win in MRC Foundation Cup but will now have carry 51kg in next month’s $5 million race.

Orderofthegarter was also penalised 1kg for the Melbourne Cup. He will also carry 51kg if he makes the Melbourne Cup field.

Jockey Jye McNeil has picked up the Caulfield Cup ride on Orderofthegarter, who is an $11 equal favourite in the latest betting on the October 17 event.

“It was encouraging to see Orderofthegarter record his third career win in the Naturalism Stakes and his first since winning a Listed race for three-year-olds in April 2017,” Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said in a statement.

“The merit of the victory on Saturday warranted a 1kg penalty for both Cups as he seeks to emulate Jameka, who won the Caulfield Cup after winning the Naturalism Stakes in 2016”.

While Orderofthegarter is a certain Caulfield Cup runner, the son of Galileo has not passed the first balloting clause for the Melbourne Cup.

Orderofthegarter needs to finish in the first eight in the Caulfield Cup to qualify for a Melbourne Cup start.

Meanwhile, Mugatoo did not receive a Caulfield or Melbourne Cup penalty for his win last week’s Newcastle Cup.

Mugatoo has 53.5kg in both Cups.

First declarations for the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate close at noon on Tuesday, after which Racing Victoria will release revised order of entry for both races.
