HISTORY was made this afternoon as Guelph won the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield as the shortest favourite in 30 years.
The Peter Snowden-trained three-year-old started at $1.40 in the fillies classic, which she dominated from start to finish.
Guelph bettered champion fillies Alinghi (2004) and Atlantic Jewel (2011), who were $1.70 favourites when they registered easy wins in the race, but even they weren't at the prohibitive odds of the Darley filly.
The great Bart Cummings trained the Caulfield Guineas-Thousand Guineas double with Alfa and Dashing Eagle in 1996, a feat Snowden matched after impressive gelding Long John strode to an emphatic win in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on Saturday.
