Queensland will take on a major touring nation for the first time in 20 years when the Reds meet Wales at Suncorp Stadium on July 19.
With the Welsh keen to play an extra game on their two-Test tour of Australia, the Queensland Rugby Union came to the party in conjunction with Tourism and Events Queensland, and the Brisbane Economic Development Agency.
“We want international sides to see a tour game against the Reds as an essential part of their tours to Australia,” QRU chief executive officer David Hanham said.
“With the British and Irish Lions game against Queensland next year locked in, and the new Nations Championship coming in 2026, there are lots of opportunities for our fans to watch the Reds face top-flight opposition outside of Super Rugby.
“It’s also a vital part of our plan to get our players playing more games.”
Queensland’s most recent outing against a major touring nation was a 41-5 thrashing of Scotland at Ballymore in 2004.
The Reds haven’t met Wales since a clash 33 years ago – also at Ballymore – that involved Wallabies legend John Eales, who at that stage was yet to play for Australia.
“I know for me, facing Wales as a Reds player in 1991 was the first top international side I played against – it was huge,” said Eales in reflecting on Queensland’s 35-24 win.
“There is so much history and heritage to these Queensland clashes against international sides.
“This match against Wales in July will be a great incentive for Queensland players and a celebration of the heritage of Queensland rugby.
“It’s a wonderful initiative and Queensland rugby fans will make something special of it.”
Wales coach Warren Gatland was “really pleased” to have locked in a third match for his team in Australia.
“We’re excited for the opportunity we have,” Gatland said.
“Australia is a tough place to go and play rugby.”
