Shaun Treweek loving rugby again after switching to Manly in off-season

MANLY’S star signing Shaun Treweek has revealed he had lost his love for the game before making the switch from West Harbour this year.

MANLY’S star signing Shaun Treweek has revealed he had lost his love for the game before making the switch from West Harbour this year.

The fullback/five-eighth has been a key architect of the Marlins’ opening three Shute Shield victories and has been tipped by coach Phil Blake to be the difference in today’s showdown against reigning premiers Sydney University.

“I am really enjoying my footy at the moment and I want that to continue, I lost that a bit in the last couple of years,” Treweek said.

“When I spoke to Manly, Phil didn’t offer me anything, didn’t guarantee me a starting place. He said I’d have to fight for my place against other guys, and that’s what I haven’t had for a while.

“I also wanted to be part of a top four club and it has all started well so far.”

Manly are leading the competition but have yet to play a top four rival, and the match at University Oval will give a firm indication of how credible they are as challengers to Uni’s throne.

Blake said this week that Treweek could well be the game-breaker.

“He has a lot of talent. I would not be surprised in the Waratahs come calling in the near future,” Blake said.

“We were very excited this summer when we heard he was interested in talking to us.

“He’s gained some weight and with that has come confidence but it is his natural talent that makes him special.

“He can kick and read the game incredibly well and I certainly think he will make the step up very soon.”

Treweek, 24, said Manly would hold no fear of the Students.

“We’re not approaching this like they’re invincible, we know that if we play to our capabilities we should get the job done,” Treweek said.

Other round four games today; Eastwood host West Harbour, Randwick host Penrith, and Gordon travel to Southern Districts.
