It may not be his decision yet, but Reds coach Les Kiss believes Queensland’s flyhalf Tom Lynagh is “in the hunt” for a Wallabies recall.
Lynagh was instrumental in the Reds’ 35-21 Super Rugby Pacific win over the Blues last Friday night at Suncorp Stadium, with his man-of-the-match performance including two tries.
“He pulled the trigger at the right time, Tommy,” Kiss said on Monday.
“He took the line on himself when he needed to, and gave us that bit of momentum when we needed it when they were trying to close us down, and kept us on the front foot.
“He’s certainly getting better and better. That composure in his game is certainly there, and his voice has become bigger in the team, and that’s a good strength.”
Lynagh, 22, has three Wallabies caps but missed out on selection for Australia’s November-December tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
He instead went on tour with the Reds to Japan, and was also part of Australian XV squad that toured England.
“He took the reins on that Japanese tour we had. The way he took control of the game certainly paid dividends for him,” Kiss said.
When asked if Lynagh had done enough to wear the Wallabies No.10 jersey this year, Kiss – who is tipped to take over from Joe Schmidt in October as Australia’s coach – said that it was not his decision.
“He’ll be in the hunt,” he said.
“We’re doing a pretty good job in making sure our (Reds) players are skilled properly, mentally tough, and ready to do their bit in good times and tough times, and I think our boys are doing well in that area.
“Tommy’s one of those guys. He’s going well.”
The fourth-placed Reds will chase back-to-back wins when they meet Fijian Drua in Suva on Saturday.
“It’s a tough one for any team to go there and then travel home, and get the job done,” Kiss said.
“We’ve formed the tactics and we’ll finalise that with the squad we build around those tactics.”
